Three works that influenced my research into this story, since they had protagonists that were silent witnesses to others’ lives were the film, Wings of Desire, a rare screenplay by Sartre, The Chips Are Down, and the role of the “witness” in Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, a disembodied spirit who watches and sees America becoming.”

Ford is the recipient of the World Fantasy Award, Nebula, Edgar Allan Poe Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, the Hayakawa Award, and Gran Prix de l’Imaginaire. He lives in Ohio in a hundred and twenty-year-old farm house surrounded by corn and soybean fields and teaches part time at Ohio Wesleyan University.
