The Twilight Pariah
Said Ford:
“As always, it’s a pleasure to work with the great, Ellen Datlow, and Tor.com Publishing, who did such a wonderful job with my previous novella, The Twilight Pariah. The story deals with the drawbacks and attributes of “invisibility,” the allure and repulsion of voyeurism, and deadly secrets. There is also a focus on the act of bearing witness to other people’s joy and suffering, and to being powerless to intervene in that suffering. Three works that influenced my research into this story, since they had protagonists that were silent witnesses to others’ lives were the film, Wings of Desire, a rare screenplay by Sartre, The Chips Are Down, and the role of the “witness” in Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, a disembodied spirit who watches and sees America becoming.”
Said Datlow:
“I look forward to everything Jeff writes, so to be the first person to read a new piece of work by him is always exciting. Jeff’s an expert at creating believable, sympathetic characters and interesting villains, often tossing them into improbable situations. We hope you’ll enjoy this new piece of fiction by him.”
